3 Reasons I've Returned to Twitter.

Hardly an important update, but I decided Twitter should have a place back in my app collection. This week I re-installed the social media app on my iPhone, and have been updating my 120-followers with my life events and internal monologue. So, why?

1. It gives me somewhere to put my random thoughts.
I spend a lot of time in my head. That’s true whether I spend time alone or whether I’m with a group of friends. I’m constantly observing, critiquing, calculating and debating what’s happening around me. Of course, this is only a decade-old trend, that the whole world could be privy to one another’s thoughts and moment-by-moment activities. But I like it. I don’t always have time to put pen to paper, but I do have time to put fingers to text.

2. Twitter keeps me up-to-date with current affairs.
When I worked as a broadcast news writer, Twitter started becoming the place to go to for breaking news. It wasn’t even proper journalists who were leading the way either. But, I’ve noticed that the traditional news outlets are updating their Twitter feeds on a non-stop basis, essentially giving me a 24-hour news feed on my phone. I follow outlets such as BBC, CNN, CBC and Brisbane Times, which gives me a smattering of happenings from around the world. I also track a some reporters or news anchors for their take on the day’s events.

3. It trains me to be concise and clear in my writing.
With only 140 characters, Twitter forces me to be choosey with my words. I hope it will help me be a better long-form writer, since finding the right words to communicate thoughts or ideas is important no matter the word count.
