Instead, I focus on pursuing an intimate relationship with Jesus, how as leaders these young people will influence others in their relationship with God simply by being an example. As well, I talk about how personal times with God and an ongoing lifestyle of gratitude and service are then directly reflected when one gets up front to lead a group in worship or prayer.
This BLS class is made up of young people who will be staff members on an upcoming art-focused Discipleship Training School. They are creative. They are musical. They are capable. But their leader let me know that most them could check things off a list, but didn’t have the heart behind why leading corporate worship/prayer carried responsibility or weight.
I’m not even totally sure what I said. But when getting feedback from the class, many of them echoed back things I’d asked God to reveal to them!
This is how Jesus responds to a group of people who are amazed at His lessons, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me.” (John 7:16 NIV) I don’t come anywhere close to the authority with which Jesus spoke, but I know that God does give me the right words, at the right time, for the right people.
